About labmate.tools

labmate.tools is a free collection of browser-based calculators and bench tools for life science labs. It is independent and vendor-neutral: nothing on the site is sponsored.

THE DETAILS LAST UPDATED 12 OCTOBER 2026

What it is

One toolbox for the whole bench, listed by category: plates, calculators, converters, labels, cells and protein, printing and cytometry. Each tool does one job — track a plate as you pipette, scale a master mix, plan a dilution, count and seed cells, load a Western, print cryo labels, check a poster, design a flow panel — and shows its formula and a worked example on the page.

Who it is for

Grad students, technicians, postdocs and lab managers. The tools are built for an iPad at the bench and also work on a laptop or phone.

How it is made

  • Free to use, with no subscription and nothing to sign up for.
  • Every tool runs in your browser. What you type, and any file you open, stays on your device — see Privacy.
  • Independent and vendor-neutral: dyes, instruments and label sheets from every maker are listed side by side, and no listing is paid for.
  • New tools come from requests. Tell us the step that slows you down at hello@labmate.tools.

Where the values come from

  • Formulas are the standard relations used in lab protocols — C₁V₁ = C₂V₂, mass = molarity × volume × molecular weight, RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r × rpm², cells/mL = mean count per square × dilution × 10⁴. Each is written out on its tool page.
  • Microplate geometry (Plate Tracker 1:1 view) follows the ANSI/SLAS microplate standards: 127.76 × 85.48 mm footprint, 9 mm well pitch for 96-well and 4.5 mm for 384-well plates.
  • Plate and flask areas (Cell Count & Seeding) are typical values for standard tissue-culture plastic. Makers differ slightly, so check your vessel's data sheet when it matters.
  • Cryo label sheets take label sizes and grids from the makers' product pages. Margins aren't published, so they are estimated; the calibration page lines them up with your printer.
  • Cytometer presets (Panel Designer) are published default or core-facility configurations, each linked to its source sheet on the tool page. Measured spectra come from FPbase (CC BY-SA 4.0); dye peaks from each maker's published tables. Spillover is an estimate — compensation always comes from single-stain controls.
  • Protein standard series follow the usual BCA, Micro BCA and Bradford kit inserts.
  • Poster sizes and checks use common conference print sizes and widely used guides for image resolution and printed text size.

How values are checked

  • The worked example on every tool page is calculated with the tool itself, and rechecked when that tool changes.
  • Reference tables are generated from the same data the tool uses, so the page and the calculator can't disagree.
  • Anything not yet checked against a primary source is marked on its page (for example “check” on some cytometer presets).
  • Every change is listed in the changelog, newest first.

What the tools don't do

They calculate and track; they can't see what's in the well. Follow your own protocol and your institution's rules, and keep your lab notebook or LIMS as the record.
