ABOUT THIS TOOL
How to use
- Pick 96 or 384 well.
- Paste your sample names, one per line — a column copied from Excel works. Add your controls in the box below.
- Choose how many replicates, and whether they sit side by side (across) or one above the other (down).
- Choose the fill order and whether controls go first or last. Tick Leave outer wells empty to avoid edge effects.
- Tap any well to keep it empty — a cracked well, or one you're saving for later. The layout flows around it.
- Too many samples for one plate? The layout continues on plate 2, 3… With Repeat controls ticked, every plate gets its own controls.
- PRINT gives the plate map with the well list on page 2. DOWNLOAD CSV gives Plate, Well, Sample, Type and Replicate — ready to adapt for qPCR or plate reader software.
Good to know
- Free to use. No subscription. Your sample names stay in this browser — nothing is uploaded.
- The layout is saved in this browser, so a refresh won't lose it.
- Replicates of one sample always sit next to each other. If the rows or columns don't divide evenly by the number of replicates, the last row or column is left empty.
- Neighbouring samples alternate between two shades of green, so replicate groups are easy to tell apart.
- Pair it with the Plate Tracker to keep your place while you pipette.
QUESTIONS · PLATE LAYOUT MAKER
Frequently asked
Can I paste my sample list from Excel?
Yes. Copy a column from your spreadsheet and paste it — one sample per line. Extra columns are ignored.
How do I avoid edge effects on a 96 well plate?
Tick Leave outer wells empty. The layout then uses only the inner wells. You can also tap any single well to keep it empty.
Can I load the layout into my qPCR software?
DOWNLOAD CSV gives Plate, Well, Sample, Type and Replicate columns, ready to adapt for qPCR or plate reader import.
What happens if I have more samples than fit on one plate?
The layout continues on plate 2, 3 and so on. With Repeat controls ticked, every plate gets its own controls.
